Frederick County Local Guide
Get to Know Frederick County
Find your footing between Frederick’s historic streets, the Monocacy Valley and the Catoctin Mountains. This guide connects renters and owners with address specific services, useful public resources and places to get to know the county.

Frederick County brings together a city of historic streets, small towns along old transportation routes, agricultural valleys and wooded mountain ridges. The National Road, B&O Railroad and C&O Canal shaped connections across the region, and their stories still help explain the places you see today.
The county was formed from Prince George’s County in 1748. Its history reaches further back through the Tuscarora and Piscataway Nations, and includes the labor and community life of free and enslaved African Americans as well as European settlers. Museums and preserved landscapes offer different ways to explore that history rather than reducing it to a single battlefield story.
Daily life changes from one address to another. Frederick city services are not identical to county services, and a home near Thurmont, Brunswick or a rural village may have a different mix of municipal utilities, private providers, wells and septic systems.
