Garrett County was formed from western Allegany County in 1872 and named for railroad president John Work Garrett. Oakland became its county seat. Rail travel, farming and forest industries helped shape its mountain communities.

Deep Creek Lake was created by a hydroelectric dam in 1925. Today, the lake, forest parks and small towns offer distinct ways to experience Maryland’s western highlands, from shoreline walks to local museums.
