Montgomery County Local Guide
Get to Know Montgomery County
From the Potomac and canal corridor to Rockville, Silver Spring and the upper county, Montgomery County includes many service boundaries. Confirm your property’s municipality and providers before arranging a move or home project.

Montgomery County was established in 1776 when Maryland divided Frederick County. Its name honors Revolutionary War general Richard Montgomery. Rockville developed as the county seat, while the county’s later growth brought a network of suburban centers, established towns and rural communities.
The canal corridor, agricultural landscapes and museums tell different parts of the local story. Visit places that interpret both opportunity and exclusion, including slavery, freedom seeking and the struggle for equal access to public spaces.
