Roots in colonial Virginia. Stafford County was formed from Westmoreland County in 1664. The Library of Virginia’s Stafford records guide (opens in a new tab) provides that starting point and a window into the county’s surviving court, land, and family records.

A local stone helped build Washington. Government Island, in Aquia Creek, supplied sandstone used in the White House, the U.S. Capitol, and other early federal buildings. The federal government purchased the island in 1791 for its building stone. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources’ quarry history (opens in a new tab) explains this tangible connection between Stafford and the nation’s capital.
