River towns and countryside. Caroline County was created in 1773 from parts of Dorchester and Queen Anne’s counties. It takes its name from Lady Caroline Eden, wife of Maryland’s governor at the time. The Maryland State Archives chronology introduces that history.

Today, a visit can connect Denton’s historic dwellings with mill heritage near Preston and forest paths beside the Choptank River. The Museum of Rural Life explores rural households, while the county trail directory offers a starting point for discovering the landscape.
